“Dr Bjorn Sturmberg has been awarded the 2024 ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year Award for his work on clean energy technology.
The Award recognises the achievements of an emerging scientist and celebrates excellence in scientific research and innovation here in the ACT.
Dr Sturmberg is a Senior Research Fellow in the Battery Storage and Grid Integration Program at The Australian National University where he works on research, development, demonstration, and commercialisation of low carbon electricity and transport systems.
His innovative research looks at how we can improve the efficiency and cost competitiveness of solar technology. He led the first retrofit of an Australian apartment complex into a solar and battery powered microgrid, where he realised the socio-economic barriers to decarbonisation and their impacts on social equity.
Dr Sturmberg’s research aims to have immediate, real-world impacts to accelerate the transition to clean energy and steer this transition towards fairer and more equitable outcomes.
Dr Sturmberg’s research and innovation activities are strongly rooted in the ACT, driving significant direct benefits to the territory.
Dr Sturmberg plans to use his title as ACT Emerging Scientist of the Year to expand on his outreach activities with young people to raise the profile of science as a valuable and applicable skill for creating a better future.”
